A grape variety with roots and rebirth – the real story of Codrinschii.

Creation and testing period:

Codrinschii is an indigenous red grape variety from Moldova, born from the cross between Rară Neagră (also known as Băbească Neagră) and Cabernet Sauvignon. It was created at the Scientific Research Institute for Viticulture and Winemaking, registered for testing in 1967, with research continuing intensively from the 1980s.

Agronomic and ampelographic characteristics
• High content of anthocyanins (~507 mg/dm³), comparable to Merlot, but with higher acidity than Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot.
• Late ripening (end of September – beginning of October).
• Resistant to frost up to –22 °C, but sensitive to fungal diseases.
• In 2016, Codrinschii covered only 229 hectares in Moldova.

A discreet period, followed by rebirth

Although created in the Soviet era, Codrinschii remained largely forgotten. Only in 2016, with the foundation of ATU Winery, was this variety revived and brought back into the spotlight.
