Codrinschii – a grape created, forgotten, and reborn
Creation and early research
Codrinschii is an indigenous Moldovan red grape, born from a cross between Rară Neagră and Cabernet Sauvignon.
It was developed at the Scientific Research Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking, entering testing in 1967, with extensive studies continuing throughout the 1980s.
Agronomic and ampelographic characteristics
This variety stands out for:
• deep colour and firm structure, similar to Merlot;
• naturally higher acidity, giving freshness and tension;
• late ripening (late September – early October);
• good resistance to frost down to –22 °C;
• limited vineyard surface in Moldova.
A quiet period followed by rebirth
Despite its potential, the grape remained in obscurity for many years.
Only in 2016, with the foundation of ATU Winery, was Codrinschii revived and brought back into the spotlight. This marked the beginning of its modern renaissance in local winemaking.
