What is Trifon Zarezan?

Trifon Zarezan is an ancient Bulgarian folk holiday dedicated to vine growers and winemakers. It symbolizes the beginning of a new cycle in the vineyard — the moment when the vine awakens after winter and receives its first impulse toward the future harvest.

At the heart of the tradition lies the symbolic first pruning of the vine: it is trimmed to stimulate growth, preserve the health of the grapes and lay the foundation for a generous harvest. This gesture is not merely an agricultural practice, but a sign of deep respect for the land and the craft, passed down from generation to generation.

The celebration has always been accompanied by festive gatherings, where wine is not just a drink, but a living testimony to work, time and hope for the year ahead. On this day, vine growers honor not only the vine itself, but also themselves — those who invest patience, care and experience into every cluster of grapes.

In some regions, a “king of the vineyard” is chosen — a symbol of luck, abundance and prosperity for the entire winegrowing season.

What will the evening be about?
