About the Rkatsiteli Grape
Rkatsiteli is considered one of the oldest grape varieties in the world, with roots reaching back thousands of years. Originating from the Georgian region of Kakheti, it has been documented as a wine grape since the 3rd millennium BC.
The name Rkatsiteli (in Georgian: რქაწითელი) translates as “red horn” or “red branch.”
Thanks to its high acidity and strong resistance to cold climates, Rkatsiteli became one of the most widespread grape varieties in the former Soviet Union — accounting for nearly 18% of total wine production.
In Moldova, as in much of Eastern Europe, winemakers are now rediscovering this ancient variety, crafting it into different expressions — fresh white wines, skin-contact “orange” styles, and sparkling versions — and bringing it back to life on the shelves of modern wine boutiques.
Aroma & Style
Rkatsiteli displays a remarkably diverse aromatic palette:
• In its classic white form, it offers notes of green apple, citrus, and fresh herbs, with lively acidity.
• In orange (skin-contact) versions, it reveals honeyed aromas, dried apricots, candied fruits, and subtle mineral tones, with a rich texture.
• As a sparkling wine, it delights with freshness, finesse, and a contemporary interpretation of ancient winemaking heritage.

On the evening of November 6, together with sommelier Vadim Brînzeanu, we’ll explore the many faces of Rkatsiteli — from youthful and expressive wines to complex, mature, and collectible interpretations.
The purpose of this tasting is to showcase several Rkatsiteli wines available at Wine Republic, offering guests the opportunity to discover how versatile and elegant this ancient grape truly is.
